The etchant I had suggested is not NOT an electrolytic one. Now, both 304 and 316 are austenitic stainless steels with 316 having an addition of 2% to 3% Molybdenum and 0.10% Nitrogen. Processing history being identical, the microstructures of these two steels are going to be similar.
