Oxalic electrolytic etch is certainly the best option for 3xx series austenitic stainless steels. It's just that not all the labs have the electrolytic etching setup. I've found the following immersion etchant to yield good results as well:

45 ml glycerol
15 ml HNO3(65%)
30 ml HCL(32%)

Mix fresh before use and do NOT store.
