The following article was written by Dr. Roch J. Shipley (see photo below) of Engineering Systems, Inc., 1998-99 Chapter Council Chair. Between corporate downsizing, meaning more work
for fewer people, advances in technology bombarding us with information,
and trying to raise a family, we must all find a way to juggle our professional
and personal time commitments. It makes it that much harder, then, to maintain
active participation in outside organizations like ASM International.
But as we begin the 1998-99 "chapter year," it's important that we all make the effort and find the time for our professional society. Organizations such as ASM depend upon the involvement of the members - especially at the local level -- in order to survive and prosper.
And just as important as what we can do for ASM is what ASM can do for us. Though a cliche, it's true nonetheless: you get out of the organization what you put in. Your ASM membership provides you with the monthly magazine you're reading right now, plus discounts on other publications, meeting registrations, and other products and services. That's the easy part, because you don't have to "do" anything. But your membership can provide you with so much more if you're willing to make an effort. Many additional benefits and resources are right at your fingertips, through participation in your local ASM chapter.
During the course of the chapter year (from September to June), local ASM chapters hold monthly technical meetings and special events, such as golf outings and plant tours, that:
The quality of your chapter and the resources it offers depends on you. By getting involved in your chapter, you help define its direction and determine the types of programs and activities that it makes available to you and your colleagues. And the level of your participation can range anywhere from simply attending regular meetings to assuming a leadership role on your chapter's executive committee. And if you have not participated in the past because "they" are not providing the types of activities and events that interest you, don't be afraid to volunteer yourself to make those things happen. I know from experience and talking with chapter leaders around the country, your input will be enthusiastically welcomed.
Though it might require some sacrifice or a talent for balancing responsibilities, I strongly urge you to become active in your local ASM chapter. I'm sure you'll find that the return on your investment is well worth the effort.
To get involved, simply contact your local chapter's chair- person, or call the Chapter Relations office at Materials Park, tel: (800) 336-5152, ext. 5651. You'll be benefiting ASM International, your local chapter, and yourself!
